In Chinese medicine plants and foods have the same origin. There is often a mild transition between medicine and food. Many plants are used in Chinese medicine a lot in their food.

Food and plants are distinguished according to their energetic properties and effects. Foods and spices are also distinguished by their cold, cool, neutral, warm or hot effects. For example pears have moisturizing and cooling effects. Eating fresh pears, stewed pears or drinking pear juice treats a dry cough as well as constipation.
